" The Wedding Quilt " The Wedding Quilt
Nyame Dua is a West African Adrinka symbol, which means God’s presence, is everywhere. Where is that more apparent than the unity of two souls?
In some West African cultures quilts are given as wedding gifts. Small pockets are sewn into the face of the quilt. On the wedding day adoring messages are placed inside by loved ones. Those messages are then sewn into the quilt as textured reminders of expressions of love. “I sought to instill the same sentiment into my work.”
This quilt, taking over one year to complete, was entirely hand pieced with silk, satin, organza, and a heavy use of hand-beaded pearl and antique silver elements. The symbols inside the circles are Adinkra representing virtuous attributes to bring to a marriage such as faithfulness, wisdom, harmony, and the ability to withstand hardships. (63in x 65in)
