" Boabab Roots "
Recapturing the Tree of Life

For most of us in the western world, being born into a materialistic capitalist society has resulted in our forgetting about our spiritual and cultural origins. Especially for a “displaced” people, it is important to maintain spiritual connections to “home” as an affirmation of our identity which is critical to our spiritual and emotional health.

The Baobab Tree grows only in Africa. I created Baobab Roots as a textile reminder of my need to stay connected to my spiritual base as well as my cultural heritage.

This piece is constructed from East Indian raw silks, Kuba cloth from Zaire and embellished with raffia strands and pheasant plumes. The back is tie-dyed linen. (68 in x 80 in)
